World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads
Norfolk NATO Fest Week
Each year, in coordination with Norfolk NATO Festival, the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads hosts a NATO Festival program, which is one of our most successful and highly attended signature events. This program consists of a reception and dinner followed by an address of an important figure in the NATO community. In April 2012, the World Affairs Council was honored to host US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as the speaker for the Banquet. In 2013, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of NATO in our local community.

General Jean-Paul Paloméros
The U.S. and Europe are facing their biggest crisis since the end of the Cold War. NATO Foreign Ministers met recently in Brussels to discuss responses to Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula. What are the implications and challenges for the Alliance and the current post-Cold War order? Even Japan now worries that its defense treaty with the US may be toothless in the face of external aggression.

No one is uniquely positioned to discuss these issues more than General Jean Paul Palomeros, Supreme Allied Commander, Transformation, who recently returned from NATO's meetings earlier this month. He will brief us on the Ukrainian crisis, NATO's plans, and the defense and security challenges facing the alliance in the 21st century.

General Paloméros assumed his current command in September 2012 after a distinguished career as both an operational Commander and fighter pilot in the French Air Force. Since joining the French Air Force Academy in 1973, he has flown 82 combat missions and more than 3,500 flying hours, mostly on Mirage F1C and Mirage 2000 aircraft. His many distinctions include serving as the French Air Force Chief of Staff (2009-2012); receiving the rank of Grand Officer of the French Legion of Honor; becoming an Officer of the National Order of Merit; and holding the Aeronautical Medal.
